Storyline :

A man wakes up to find himself locked in a tiny, cramped concrete room, in which he can barely move. He doesn't remember why he is there and where he came from. He has a terrible stomach injury and is slowly bleeding to death. He begins to explore the narrow confines of his prison and crawls around the maze-like room, only to see a horrible vision of hell waiting for him at each end of the room.

Finally he gives up on the struggle and collapses in exhaustion. Then he begins to remember images from his past. Clinging to these images he creeps forward with the last ounces of his strength and meets a woman in a place that stinks of rotting corpses. The man and the woman both try to recall where they came from, but their memories are so uncertain that they are not even sure they want to return. The man is ready to give up but the woman insists on going forward. Neither of them can imagine the incredible end to the journey

This movie, although only 40 minutes long, sends Saw and Cube back to kindergarten, making it look stupid, shallow and pointless. Once again Shinya Tsukamoto proves that he is one of the most challenging, thought-provoking and original directors of today, absolutely not afraid of pushing boundaries in terms of what might be shown on celluloid. And he knows pretty well what scares us, oh yes. It's like your worst, fever-induced nightmares come surprisingly alive, and I'm not talking about waking up in a completely darkened, concrete maze.

It might be a parallel for war, genocide or just totally painful, desperate loneliness... or just a statement that, after all, we are nothing more than a piece of meat which happened to have a tiny spark of life inside... This movie raises so many questions... and even if most of them remain unanswered, it is worth to feel really uncomfortable for this 40 minutes. Some people will probably start having nightmares like this, but for me it was more like a relief that Tsukamoto and his protagonist lived it for me...

A Recomended Movie : Four morbid tales of mutilation, incest, rape and sacrilege!

Well, it's safe to say that Subconscious Cruelty is one weird film! Supposedly an insight into the human mind, Subconscious Cruelty is comprises four macabre and bizarre tales of the extreme. The first segment, entitled 'Ovarian Eyeball' is really just a warm up, but it's good in that it gives the viewer an idea of what to expect from the next three segments. It simply sees a naked woman laid out on a table, while another woman cuts into her abdomen and pulls out a human eyeball! I've got no idea what the point is, but it certainly makes for visceral viewing. The following story is the best of the bunch, and takes in the "old favourite" sick movie theme of incest. The segment follows a man who lives alone with his pregnant sister. He's repulsed by her pregnancy - yet he wants to have sex with her anyway, and naturally he gets his way.

This story stands out because of the monotonous and 'matter of fact' narration, as well as the ending - which doesn't fail to deliver the shocks. This segment is well acted, well filmed and easily the highlight of Subconscious Cruelty.

Naturally, the next two sections aren't as good as the second one; so the only way from there is down, but director Karim Hussain still manages to pull something out of the bag before the film ends. He doesn't do it right away, however, as the third segment is the weakest of the film, and simply sees a lot of people have sex with the ground. It's very surreal, and therefore memorable for that same reason; but there doesn't seem to be a lot of point to it, and I was in the mood for something a bit more morbid after the second section. The film ends on a high, however, as while I'm not entirely sure what the point was - the final segment features the film's best imagery. This segment focuses on religion, and certainly isn't for anyone that values it! Director Karim Hussain has achieved something here - as while this collection of four 'extreme' stories doesn't come together as a complete whole, the film almost feels tasteful as it's shot in such an eloquent and eye catching manner.

The director would seem to have been imitating the highly respected surreal director Luis Buñuel, albeit with gore, rape and incest; and if you ask me, he hasn't done a bad job at all. Not for everyone, but certainly worth a look for extreme fanatics!

Aftermath pushes the boundaries of the genre in ways few films even dream of. Nacho Cerda made the film as part of a trilogy, focusing on death, post-death, and rebirth. Aftermath (the 2nd film in the trilogy) shows how we are all at the mercy of others once we die; our bodies nothing more then husks of meat to be poked, prodded, and disassembled

It reveals - amongst a litany of gruesome, detailed shots - the inherent vulnerability of death, which is really the strength of this film, and the reason the gory contents hit home so very, very hard. The message is clear: we will all end up here and it is not a pretty place to be
This film is not just some glorified autopsy video, although it does show in amazing, realistic detail the process of an autopsy. Half way through the film, right when you are just getting used to the sounds and sights of a human body being ripped open and taken apart, the film changes into something much more depraved, vile, and deeply unsettling. Good times, indeed

Suspiria : (1977) Gore Classic

Storyline :

A young American dancer travels to Europe to join a famous ballet school. As she arrives, the camera turns to another young woman, who appears to be fleeing from the school. She returns to her apartment where she is gruesomely murdered by a hideous creature.

Meanwhile, the young American is trying to settle in at the ballet school, but hears strange noises and is troubled by bizarre occurrences. She eventually discovers that the school is merely a front for a much more sinister organization.

"One of the Scariest Movie of all time "

A German ballet school for girls is the setting for mysterious deaths, in this 1977 horror story, written and directed by Dario Argento. "Suspiria" is a visually stunning film.

The images contain objects we recognize, like people, buildings, and interior decor. But the objects seem vaguely menacing, and less real than surreal, as though they symbolize ideas, repressed desires, or subconscious fears. The vivid, rich colors, strange camera angles, deep shadows, and bright light piercing through darkness, all contribute to the impression that the viewer is trapped in someone else's nightmare.

One haunting segment of the film takes place in a huge, and strangely empty, public square, at night. A blind man and his German shepherd dog stand in the middle of the square, surrounded by imposing buildings of neo-classical architectural style. Some professional reviewers of this film have suggested that the public square is a veiled reference to Hitler and Nazism. Indeed, one could argue that the film's subtext is an indictment of fascism.

"Suspiria" is not for everyone. It is unsettling, and at times grisly. The plot is weak, and plot elements are not really explained. The acting is largely irrelevant. And while the background music is suitably gothic, it is also frantic and monotonous.

The best approach to this "art-house" film is to ignore the superficial plot, and focus instead on the fabulous cinematography, and the gothic images as conceptual metaphors.

Plot Storyline :

Richard returns home from military service to a small town in the Midlands. He has one thing on his mind: revenge. Payback for the local bullies who did some very bad things to his brother. At first his campaign employs guerrilla tactics, designed to frighten the men and put them ill at ease. But then he steps up his operation, and one by one these local tough guys are picked off by the terrifying angel of vengeance that Richard has become.

I really enjoyed this movie a great deal. From the start, knowing the synopsis in advance, caused the audience, myself included, to be on edge.

The way it was filmed merely adding to that. The tension was high enough that one woman in the audience gasped when the speaker crackled!.The comic moments in the film was used skilfully to lighten the tone between violent and gripping drama (are you listening Oliver Stone). These funny moments are truly hilarious, but are themselves edgy.

My scale used when viewing a film is how long before I look at my watch. Well this one got 1 hour 15 minutes, a good score. Benchmarks - Open Water - 15 minutes, Hero - who needs a watch.

Go and see this film, you will not be disappointed.

I thought this was a true original and it made me break out in a sweat at certain points. Not many films have a physical effect on their audience.

There were some astonishing moments and scene transitions that were literally breathtaking. I didn't believe the director had put certain things in to solely shock as some people have suggested. The film looks very lush in style and there were some stunning compositions. My favourite story was the final one with the sickly grandson of the original character.

I am trying to source 'Hukkle' now as I want to see more by this director. I have not seen anything this interesting for some time. This film lingers in my mind.

Have seen a lot of horrors and this isn't one of them, no thrill, no build up and certainly no suspense. If seeing people raped and mutilated is your thing then this is for you. However, have to recommend any of the saw's for a proper build up where you are honestly left wondering whats coming next.

To Create a story, in this film you have to prove evidence of your love to your partner, not just in words but also through actions

This movie is sadistic, horrible, because, torture too cruel to prove it

Dead Snow, which should have had the name "Red Snow" , but could not because there already is a film with such a name, and from where.. jepp Norway that one too. We got a thing for snow, and man did it turn out good in this one. I think they somehow got to combine the mayhem and fun from some of the classics, at the same time as they capture a bit of Norwegian fun with the music and scenery.

I definitely recommend the movie, for those who are fans of Zoombies and gore.

It's been fun reading the comments and what people think of the movie, and seeing such an attention for a zombie film from Norway.

HORDE : Land of Zombie (2009)

Storyline :

A posse of crooked cops, malevolent gangsters and a horde of walking dead are the centre point of this gruesome, tight, action packed, claustrophobic tale of retribution and escape. Penned like animals, on the top floor of a deserted high-rise block, these two opposing gangs find that they are not alone in the lair of bloodthirsty corridors of death. Joining forces to survive, they must reach ground level together or perish.

The French have been enjoying something of a horror renaissance in recent years, giving us some of the scariest and bloodiest movies that the genre has had to offer; La Horde, an apocalyptic zombie movie in the vein of Zack Snyder's Dawn Of The Dead and Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later, continues this trend, being a hugely entertaining Gallic gore-fest packed with superbly executed edge-of-the-seat horror action.

The film sees a team of vigilante cops break into a dilapidated tower block in order to exact justice on the gangsters responsible for the death of one of their colleagues; the vicious criminals turn the tables on the lawmen, however, but before they can carry out the execution of their prisoners, an outbreak of the undead forces a change of plan: the bad guys must reluctantly team up with the cops if they stand any chance of escaping from the zombie infested building alive.

Although the whole zombie siege schtick has been done to death since Romero's Night of the Living Dead way back in '68, directors Yannick Dahan and Benjamin Rocher attack their oft-told tale with so much vigour that this fact is easily forgiven. The spot-on direction, excellent decayed urban setting, gloriously splattery effects (enhanced by carefully considered use of CGI), and a whole lot of extreme fire-power combine to deliver a non-stop roller-coaster ride of splendidly gory action, whilst well drawn characters with emotional depth serve to enrich the film's basic set-up.

With several brutal fist-fights between the living and the hideous screeching zombies, a thrilling, bullet riddled, blood drenched last half hour and a satisfyingly bleak, but perfectly fitting ending, La Horde is not only one of the most enjoyable of the new-wave of French horror films, but also one of the most kick-ass zombie films ever.

This remake of HG Lewis's classic exploitation horror of the 60s, leaves much of the hayseed humour intact while using today's more permissive attitudes to crank up the sex and gore aspects. Sometimes its difficult to be sure what you're watching – a bad sex flick or a bad horror pic – but either way, the certainty that the makers aren't really too bothered about the artistic or creative merit of their work leaves you feeling strangely forgiving of its shortcomings. And you can bet your life that Lewis would have been showing the same kind of thing as this flick if he'd been able to get away with it back in 1964.

The story remains fairly close to the original: a group of yankees are diverted through Pleasant Valley by detour signs deliberately placed by the town's inhabitants and find themselves picked off in grisly and imaginative ways as they discover that they are the menu for the town's jubilee barbecue. I seem to remember some of Lewis's killings were a bit more imaginative, though: where was the death by barrel? The luckless strangers are also no longer married couples but the kind of randy youngsters seen only in horror films and American Pie movies, and you don't really feel sorry for any of them as they stumble blindly towards their inevitable deaths..

The acting's pretty lousy in this one, and some of the Civil War Southern belles look (and dress) like they've just stepped from the pages of a Playboy centre-spread, but the tongue in cheek quality of the humour prevents it from being just another horror flick. Robert Englund stands out as the town's one-eyed mayor but it is the gory deaths that it will attract most fans of the genre, and they're not likely to be disappointed.

Martin : 1977 Gore Classic

Storyline :

Martin is a modern sort of vampire. He gains his victims cooperation with the use of a hypodermic needle instead of hypnotism and uses razors in the place of fangs. Martin claims to be 84 years old and certainly drinks human blood.

The boy arrives in Pittsburgh to stay with his uncle who promises to save Martin's soul and destroy him once he is finished, but Martin's loneliness finds other means of release.

George A. Romero did an outstanding job with this movie. It is not your usual vampire flick. Martin can walk in sunlight, garlic does not work, crosses don't work, and he does not even have fangs. He simply cuts his victims after putting them to sleep. This is also a very odd but beautifully shot picture. It has a low-budget gritty feel, almost handheld but it fits the story perfectly. It also uses some great Black and White photography. The acting is top notch. There are no names just people, although sometimes weird people.

Also Tom Savini is in it. He has a small role but he is a good actor. It really is too bad he really has not caught on to more mainstream movies. But he also did the FX for this movie. It does get bloody. But it never is gory. But do not get me wrong, the FX is felt. Overall this is a must see vampire movie. It is great.

Hit and Run 2009

In some ways routine and in some ways interesting, this splatter heavy horror flick at least doesn't skimp on thrills. It stars Laura Breckenridge as Mary, who during Spring Break has a little too much to drink. During her drive home she unknowingly strikes a man and he gets stuck on her bumper - which she doesn't realize until she gets home. Acting out of pain and rage, he lashes out at her and she whacks at him with a golf club hard enough to finish him off - or so she thinks. While it does succumb to the genre cliché of having a "villain" who's hard to kill, it does work in terms of a story where things just keep spiralling out of control. Neither main character is completely sympathetic, which does help. And neither character is completely one-dimensional. Unfortunately, "Hit and Run" is one of those modern genre flicks that goes for the flamboyant visual a little too often, for example, camera angles and editing. This really wasn't necessary. Credit needs to go to the director, Enda McCallion, in one respect. This film never ever stops moving; the pacing is excellent. "Hit and Run" might be some things, but boring isn't one of them. It's basically decent, gory and visceral entertainment. It's a dark film but is still rather compelling and never goes too far over the top. It even has the nerve not to have a standard, clichéd ending. The acting is acceptable in the main roles, with Kevin Corrigan - a guy you may have seen in films ranging from "GoodFellas" to "The Departed" to "Pineapple Express" - doing fine as the sullen, disturbed antagonist. Overall, it's perfectly watchable and maintains a good energy level for 84 minutes.

Storyline :

A group of college students visit a secluded vacation home to celebrate their upcoming graduation. The fun doesn't last long when a sadistic psychopath forces them to participate in his deadly contest.

The rules are simple -- in order to survive they must kill each other. As tension builds, and relationships begin to crumble, they realize that only one can make it out alive. I went into this movie with such high expectations that I can't even describe. I was so excited because my friends saw it and told me it was awesome and the entire plot of this movie sounded cool. When I went to Blockbuster and rented it, I could barely wait to watch it. Then I put it in, watched it, and was upset. I didn't get exactly what I wanted. I thought it would be way different than it actually was.

So I was pretty upset with the way it turned out. Then I watched it again last night and this time I knew what was going to happen so I thought it would be even worse, but then I watched it and it turned out to be one of my favorite movies. Since I went in the first time with such high expectations, it kind of sucked because I wasn't "watching the movie". But then I watched it for what it was, and what it was, and what it is was very good. I suggest renting it, or buying it.

France's Gaspar Noe (Irreversible, I Stand Alone), has delivered an incredible explosion of mind trips, neon, psychedelic strobing lights, amazing visual effects and photography that gives the viewer a voyeuristic trip through the channels of the brain. The story is basically a Brother and Sister that lost their parents in a tragic car wreck when they were children, and divided into different homes, but have rekindled their love for each other after many years. The Sister (Linda) is a stripper, and the Brother (Oscar) is a druggie and occasional drug dealer. After Linda leaves for work, Oscar decides to get stoned, but a friend calls him wanting him to bring him a stash.

The nightlife of Tokyo is on display, with glittering everything and very bright flashing colors as we enter Oscar's mind for a trip after he gets shot. For most of the movie, Oscar appears to be watching over his Sister, or is this just what his fading brain cells are producing, kind of in a "Jacob's Ladder" way. Either way, the visuals produce a very trippy effect and make this a supreme stoner film. It's a movie of drugs, graphic sex, and a journey towards the creation of the very start of a life, following from inside the woman, receiving the sperm swimming towards the female egg, fertilizing it and, then the baby. Even though the story itself is kind of second to all the mind blowing visuals, it still anchors the movie to a point, that this is not just one big light show with dazzling visual effects.

I believe the movie is concentrating on the circle of life, from beginning to end, and also showing the damaging effects of drugs as a hole. But more than that, the viewer is challenged at all times to follow the story, whose mind are we in as we take in the images. Since they are images of the mind, time shifts are constant as memories become realities as everything moves along. But being merely a voyeur in all of this, we watch other people's lives, watch their passion, love making, and daily dealings. The visuals might be too much for some people, because they are somewhat hard to watch at times, especially when the images are slightly blurred. But all in all, I loved this movie, because I became so engrossed in everything going on, and the frenetic visuals taxed my own brain to capture whatever Gaspar Noe was throwing at me.

The movie is hypnotizing in many places in a good way, at least I thought so, but different people with different life experiences will come to their own conclusions about this fascinating movie. It's hard to imagine where Noe will take us next.

Storyline :

Frustrated with his most recent film doing poorly, film director Able Whitman finds himself at a strip club where he meets and takes home one of the strippers, Gigi Stops. They have an accident on the road which kills Gigi leaving Able to figure out what to do with the body. He conveniently decides to "disguise" the body parts as set pieces to his new horror film. When this new design style is met with much praise, Able decides he needs more parts to fulfill his new "project".

For a porn actress seeking to cross over to the mainstream, taking a role in a B-(or less)-movie might seem like a heaven-sent opportunity, but if your name's Sasha Grey (real name Marina Ann Hantzis), you might want to think twice about appearing in a Lee Demarbre flick.

For the uninitiated, Demarbre is a Canadian film maker whose credits include the cult film Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, which was shot on a budget of $45,000.

His latest offering, Smash Cut, which made its world debut at Montreal's 2009 edition of the Fantasia Film Festival, is an equally low budget nod to schlock impresario Herschell Gordon Lewis (Two Thousand Maniacs, The Wizard of Gore). While such a film would seem like a natural opportunity for someone from the adult film realm to use as a segue into the mainstream, a later production – Steven Soderbergh's "The Girlfriend Experience" also starring Grey - was released well before Smash Cut, making this look like her second mass market role, when, in fact, the reverse is true. All of which is too bad for Grey, who is the only member of the cast who displays anything remotely approaching acting talent.

The story, such as it is, is thin, and one can suppose that Demarbre was merely looking for a vehicle for tongue-in-cheek humor and gore. A down on his luck director by the name of Able Whitman (played by veteran shock horror actor David Hess of original Last House on the Left fame), dismayed by the critical reception to his cheap films special effects, decides to use real human body parts to impart realism. His first victim turns out to be a relative of April Carson (Grey), a reporter for a local television station. With the backing of her station manager (H.G. Lewis) she sets out to infiltrate Whitman's production by responding to a casting call.

None of this really matters, though, as the film's true mission is to emulate the low budget schlock of Lewis' films, which it does admirably and is about the only critical compliment I can give this film.

Overall the story is poorly executed trash. In keeping with the Lewis factor, everyone involved with the exception of Grey seems to be trying to outdo each other on the bad acting scale. Lines appear to be not merely improved, but takes are used that show actors struggling on the fly to think them up.

Grey, whose acting is wildly uneven, is the only cast member who shows any potential of being able to believably take on a role, whether or not this was by choice or accident, given the atrocious performances turned in by the rest of the cast, is a matter for further debate.

What's unfortunate, however, is that this movie will be released after Grey's performance in Soderbergh's "The Girlfriend Experience", and look like a step down from a promising debut.

What's not in question here is Grey's acting ability, but the projects she chooses to appear in from here on in. Some of this may not be within her control, given her ongoing career in the adult realm, but choosing to appearing a mainstream film that has all the look, feel, and production values of a porn film (minus the sex) can hardly be taken as a wise career move.

I read Clive Barker's 'Books of Blood' years ago and instantly fell in love with them; they had a wonderful combination of horror and fantasy, fear and humor. I've been pinning for them to be filmed for years and I finally got my wish to marginally mixed results.

A parapsychology professor and her assistant have been trying to prove their theories about the afterlife and beyond when an opportunity presents itself in the form of a house with a long paranormal history and a university student who seems to be a psychic. They decide to use his abilities to try to tap into the house's energies, but things are not as they seem and the experiment goes in ways no one could have guessed.

First things first, I had a few issues with the film. First was the bookend story segments that surrounds the plot; the movie essentially spoils the best part of the story from the very first seen. The second (and bigger) problem the movie has is the running time; at 100 minutes the movie is too damn long. This is based on a short story (two actually) and there is just not enough driving plot to justify the length. A good 20 minutes needed to be trimmed off, as is the movie is gets pretty slow at parts. The last real problem I had was that the stories this is based on weren't the best stories from the books, they were just the first stories in them; the reason for this seems to be that a series of films based on the books is in the works and they wanted to start from the beginning, 'Pig Blood Blues' (great story) is apparently up next.

Having said all that I still enjoyed the film more than I was frustrated by it. Even though this wasn't the best story from the novels it is still an engaging tale of the macabre and features some occasional excellent horror imagery. The principal actors in the limited cast are all suited nicely to their respective rolls and the character dialogue has a pleasantly moody cadence to it.

The visual and gore effects are (relative to the genre) fairly limited, but what is on display packs quite a visceral punch. One particularly memorable moment involves a poor girl getting her face peeled like an orange. That being said, this is not a gore film, despite what the DVD box would have you believe.

The setting and location of the film (Scotland) fit the story well and provide a Gothic backdrop for the action. The house were most of the film takes place is a appropriately grim without feeling like a clique spook house.

Despite the some slow sections in the middle and the unfortunate story reveal early on, it manages to be a creepy tale about death and beyond.

Storyline :

Faith is a young woman who is on the run from an abusive boyfriend, and who settles in Atlanta to make a new life for herself. Yet another low budget horror encountered by some strange mix of chance and curiosity, Slaughter is a film I happily put on with no knowledge of what to expect.

Following the young Faith as she flees the paranoid clutches of her apparently unstable ex-boyfriend, Slaughter sees her leave the big city to escape to the rural beauty of a farmhouse with friend Lola. The fear of the life she left behind catching up to her combines with the oddness of the neighbouring slaughterhouse farmer to create an uncomfortable strangeness...

This one decides to start us off with some hand-held dark jump cut shots of a girl being dragged across a farm and dumped in a lake before introducing us to our main character. And that's fine, for now. After some hideously clichéd caricatures are thrown at us, we move from the city to the farm: a farm where the ladies are sure to do some heavy work in skimpy clothing, of course. Already things are vacuous and ghastly. Cue a shady farmer, some slight mystery, and our main character's sudden development into the type of person who wanders repeatedly into areas she shouldn't go. Let's have some more vacuousness and ghastliness in the form of an utterly unnecessary lesbian kiss, pandering to the brigade of eager males we obviously should expect to find amidst our audience. The "slow building of tension" is really just a lack of decent plot, as evidenced by the film's apparent indecision in choosing its antagonist. Why not hold at least two in waiting, just in case? We get to see just about every over-used element of cheap horror cinema as the film drags on, provoking our slow slip from our chairs as the eyelids begin to droop, simultaneously welling with tears of despair and hope that this will all soon end. But no, the slow beginning appears not to have consumed enough of the running time to prevent a deliriously drawn out last act of "twists": silly turns in plot making little sense, and even less surprise. By the final resolution of the story, a painfully pathetic attempt at finishing a woeful piece of unending rubbish, I was almost weeping in agony. This was a truly testing experience; one which demanded a tremendous amount of resilience and restraint to keep my fingers separated from the eject button. Oh, and if the lack of tension, characterisation, fear, plot, dialogue, interest, emotion, or any form of artistic merit wasn't enough for you, the film flips daintily from looking like a television programme to a video game to something resembling a film, and back again and again and again.

With absolutely nothing, and I do mean nothing, to assuage the pain of wasting however long that apparent infinity actually lasted, Slaughter is, perhaps fittingly, pigshit. One of the very VERY worst films I've ever had to sit through, it's just angering in its awfulness.

"Jue Ming Pai Dui" a.k.a. "Invitation Only" is another brutal film of sadism and torture. I do not like this sub-genre of horror and I have already seen similar sadism before, since the stories are very alike with a shallow pretext to show graphic tortures. This unpleasant film is not the worst slasher and the special effects and makeup are very realistic but unfortunately the plot is ridiculous. My vote is four.

Watching 'Men Behind The Sun' is a very odd experience, because it's difficult to tell what exactly it is trying to achieve. On the surface it is presented as a supposedly serious expose of some of the little known war crimes committed by the Japanese in WW2. But it is made in such a trashy way (compounded by the badly dubbed copy I watched) that it comes across closer to an 'Ilsa, She-Wolf Of The SS' exploitation movie, minus the sex.

The reason this movie is so notorious is mainly because of a handful of scenes. One sequence, the frostbite experiment, is shocking, but obviously special effects, so gorehounds will treat it like a Romero or Fulci gore scene. However, two others, the autopsy scene, and the decompression chamber scene, appear to use real corpses. These are gruesome but strangely fascinating. What really pushes this movie over the edge though are the two scenes which involve animal abuse. One is very short but involves a horde of fleeing rats being burned alive. This scene is obviously real. The other is the notorious segment which involves a cat being eaten alive by rats. This appears to be real, and if it is, it's the most reprehensible thing I've ever seen in a movie. If it is faked it is one of the most convincing special effects I've ever watched, and even so, the cat is obviously highly distressed.

I must admit I still don't know what to think about this movie. If the film makers genuinely intended this to be a serious look at Japanese atrocities I would applaud it for bringing to attention a disgusting series of events that should not be forgotten. However, as I am dubious about their sincerity, I remain nonplussed. I can't really get all high and mighty about it, because after all I did watch the thing, and therefore I would feel like a hypocrite for having done so. All I can say is that if you want to see an extreme piece of film making and are not easily disturbed, 'Men Behind The Sun' is truly unforgettable.

Storyline :

Three people in Tokyo take a surreal voyage of self-discovery through memory and nightmares. "O" intends suicide while talking on a cell-phone with a stranger he meets on line who plans a simultaneous suicide. Events take a horrifying turn.

Keiko Kirishima is a cool, seemingly emotionless police detective, brilliant but off-putting. She's faced with two mutilated corpses who appear to have killed themselves, but she's not sure. A cell-phone number links the deaths. She calls on Akumu Tantei, a poor and suicidal young man who has the ability to enter people's dreams. He's reluctant to help. His past haunts him. A subconscious duel of terror and blood awaits the three.

The premise caught me and I was on my way to watch it on DVD. It is haunting creepy and very violent. This violent thriller/fantasy had me stayed up for a night. The director had the story that looks like real. That scared me, pondering on the main theme of this, "suicide". After the thrilling violent suicides, you will find that violence is the least point you take note, it is the brutal violence, the idea on suicide when you just think about it. So it pretty got me like straight to the brain.

The story shows the first bloody suicide and Keiko (Hitomi), a cop transferred is discovering the first suicide. She realises that it is no ordinary suicide but the other police thinks the other way. Then it shows the second suicide, the non-stop stabbing on the neck, the dead man's wife told them that it is like that he was in a nightmare which is true. They found that "O" is the one who killed them. They want the mysterious guy who can go to people's dreams, played by Ryuhei Matsuda, but he says that he don't want to go to people's dreams anymore. Until when one of cop calls "O" and awaits for death. He can't be saved. Keiko calls "O" and wants to arrest him because she wants to save more victims falling into his hands. From there, the thrilling "race" of not sleeping starts. It may be confusing but I am able to understand it. Be warned of very shaky scenes where you can't even see what is happening.

Overall : It will seduce you to its dark mystery and from there, you will find it hard to take your eyes from the screen. The director did it with a sense of humour and dark mystery. It is very bloody but soon it is not the point.

The Singaporean DVD consists of TV spots, trailers and some boring stuff. There is not even a making of. The DVD is rated M-18.

Storyline :

Marybeth escapes the clutches of the deformed, swamp-dwelling iconic killer Victor Crowley. After learning the truth about her family's connection to the hatchet-wielding madman, Marybeth returns to the Louisiana swamps along with an army of hunters to recover the bodies of her family and exact the bloodiest revenge against the bayou butcher.

This sequel picks up right at the end of the 2006 with Marybeth (now played by Danielle Harris) escaping the swamp. She goes to Rev. Zombie (Tony Todd) who informs her that her father, uncle and another man were the ones who originally murdered Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder), the maniac in the swamp who just killed all her friends.

Marybeth and Zombie gather up a group of hunters and head back to the swamp so that they can kill the hatchet-faced madman once and for all. HATCHET was a film that pretty much came out of nowhere and became a cult favorite very quickly. I enjoyed the film a lot and while this sequel isn't quite as good there's still plenty to enjoy. I'll admit right off the top that this is a fairly good throwback to the 80s slasher craze as we got the same type of killer and of course the different variety of characters. We have the voodoo priest, the dumb rednecks and of course a few sluts thrown in for some nudity. The screenplay doesn't take anything too serious and the story, while unoriginal, at least offers up some decent kill scenes. Speaking of the kill scenes, I must say that a lot of creativity went into them and old school horror fans are going to be happy to know that the majority of effects are real and not just some CGI crap. One of the most memorable scenes has a guy getting the back of his head sandblasted and there's another classic scene with a chainsaw that I won't ruin.

The final shots of the movie, again, I won't ruin them, is pure mayhem and I must admit that it was rather priceless and I'm sure fans will be talking about it for years into the future. Most horror fans will always remember Harris from HALLOWEEN 4 and 5 but she turns in a pretty good performance here. Her character has a little more drama than just someone standing around waiting to scream and I think the actress handled the part well. Todd is always delightful in any movie so it's good seeing him with a pretty big part.

Hodder not only serves as the large killer but he also gets to play the mutant's father in a flashback sequence. Tom Holland, director of films like FRIGHT NIGHT, THINNER and CHILD'S PLAY also appears here. The rest of the supporting cast fill their parts nicely but none of them stick out too much. Being a real throwback means we get some nudity, which comes in a couple very funny ways with a video camera but we also get a classic sex scene like none that I've ever seen.

There are several attempts at comedy that fail in the film but this sex scene works very well. I think there are a few too many dry spots in the movie but overall the film delivers enough of what fans are going to be wanting.

Brazil (1985)

Storyline :

Sam Lowry is a harried technocrat in a futuristic society that is needlessly convoluted and inefficient. He dreams of a life where he can fly away from technology and overpowering bureaucracy, and spend eternity with the woman of his dreams.

While trying to rectify the wrongful arrest of one Harry Buttle, Lowry meets the woman he is always chasing in his dreams, Jill Layton. Meanwhile, the bureaucracy has fingered him responsible for a rash of terrorist bombings, and both Sam and Jill's lives are put in danger.

Brazil is definitively one of the top ten movies of all times.

Its a sort of anti-Utopian spectacle, in the same fashion of George Orwell's 1984. The movie has a very complex sequence of events, which require more than one viewing for full understanding. In fact, the first time i saw Brazil, i didn't enjoy it much. But then i gave it a second chance, and the pleasure of watching it increased exponentially. The more I watch it, the more I discover hidden aspects and new ways to interpret this masterful creation. The scenario is extraordinary, mixing long pipe lines and a almost omnipresent Gothic atmosphere. If you didn't like the movie the first time you saw it, don't be by any means discouraged.

This movie requires patience and an active role from the viewer. Finally, Brazil deserves special praise for all the dream-like sequences of the main character and the music fits in perfectly well.
